A young Lithuanian woman, Karin, impulsively marries an Italian fisherman from Stromboli, a volcanic island in Italy, seeking a better life after World War II. However, her new reality proves harsh and barren, with traditional villagers displaying hostility towards the foreign bride who doesn't conform to their ways. As Karin struggles to adapt to her isolated life, she must confront the monotony, routine, and brutality of rural life on Stromboli, where the effects of war still linger.
