Jonas, a young drifter, wanders in a deserted area on the road to Salina, Kansas. He stops at a desolate roadside service station where Mara, the owner, identifies him as her son Rocky, who disappeared four years ago. Feeling sorry for Mara, he pretends to be Rocky's identity and assumes his role, befriending Billie, his alleged sister, played by Mimsy Farmer. As Jonas becomes more deeply entrenched in the charade, dark secrets about Rocky's disappearance begin to surface, threatening to destroy the fragile reality he has created.
