Abby McClure (Doris Day), a widow with three sons who runs the lumberyard her husband owned, is tricked into calling divorcee Jake Iverson (Brian Keith) by her matchmaking sister Maxine (Pat Carroll). Despite initial reservations about Jake's past infidelity with sexy neighbor Cleo, Abby and Jake develop a romance at Herbie Fleck's wise-cracking drive-in, where they stay out until 2 am. As their relationship deepens, the blended family faces numerous challenges, including hostile reactions from Abby's sons and Jake's teenage daughter Stacey (Barbara Hershey). Ultimately, the couple elopes, leading to a series of comedic misadventures before finally reconciling with their children.
