Captain John Hull Abston (Chris Cooper) and his Union army party arrive at Sarah Anders' (Patricia Clarkson) farm in southeastern Kentucky during the American Civil War. The soldiers take what they can find, but their presence is met with resistance from a young Confederate sympathizer who plots revenge against the Yankees. As tensions escalate, Sarah's son seeks to avenge his family's losses, while Captain Abston forms an unlikely bond with Sarah and her boy.
