In 1966, Senegalese author Ousmane Sembene directed the film "Black Girl" ("La Noire de..."), a drama that tells the story of Diouana, a young Senegalese woman who moves from her native Dakar to Antibes, France, to work for a French couple. Initially elated to have work and experience a new cosmopolitan lifestyle, Diouana soon finds herself constrained and alienated in her role as a domestic servant, forced to work as a servant despite her hopes of caring for children. The film follows Diouana's struggles with racism, exploitation, and loneliness, as she becomes increasingly aware of the harsh treatment she receives from the couple, who treat her as little more than a slave.
