John Cassavetes plays Marvin Stewart, a heavy-drinking widower who develops a close friendship with 11-year-old orphan Gibran Brown as Tige Jackson after taking him in. Marvin wants to adopt Tige but must consider giving up the boy he loves for a stranger with better genes and bank balance, whose identity is revealed to be that of wealthy suburbanite Richard Davis played by Billy Dee Williams.
