In this haunting adaptation of Anton Chekhov's novella, a seemingly carefree aristocrat's world unravels in a seaside resort town in the Caucasus. Laevsky, an educated but aimless civil servant, finds himself trapped in a web of guilt and obligation as he tries to abandon his mistress Nadya, a married woman with no means to survive on her own. The situation escalates into a tense duel between two men, set against the backdrop of Nadya's desperate struggles to escape her captors, as Laevsky must confront his own moral compromises in order to be free.
