Vanessa del Rio was born Ana Maria Sanchez on March 31, 1952, in Harlem, New York, to Cuban and Puerto Rican parents. She began her adult film career at age 22 with a role in "China Doll" due to financial necessity, but continued working until her retirement in 1999. After the AIDS scare, del Rio returned to the industry shortly after and remains active through her website and select appearances.
