Biography

Carmen Amaya was a Spanish Romani flamenco dancer and singer born in Somorrostro, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. She is widely regarded as "the greatest Flamenco dancer ever" and "the most extraordinary personality of all time in flamenco dance." A trailblazer for female flamenco, she mastered footwork previously reserved for male dancers, and her strong character was often reflected in her bold stage presence.
