Biography

Djibril Diop Mambéty was a Senegalese film director, actor, and poet born near Dakar to a Muslim cleric family of the Lebou tribe. He began his career in theater and graduated from acting school before directing his first short film, Contras' City (City of Contrasts), at age 23. Mambéty's unconventional cinematic technique earned international acclaim for his two feature films, "Hyenas" (1992) and possibly others.
