Reinhold Messner, born September 17, 1944 in South Tyrol, Italy, is a renowned German-speaking Italian mountaineer and explorer. He made history with the first solo ascent of Mount Everest and, along with Peter Habeler, the first ascent of Everest without supplementary oxygen. A prolific author, Messner has written over 80 books on his climbing experiences, solidifying his reputation as one of the greatest mountaineers of all time.
