Biography

Virgil Ivan "Gus" Grissom was an American astronaut and test pilot who became one of the original Mercury Seven selected by NASA for Project Mercury in 1959. A veteran of both World War II and the Korean War, Grissom flew in space twice, as the second American to do so, before becoming a key figure in the Gemini and Apollo programs. Tragically, he lost his life along with Ed White and Roger Chaffee on January 27, 1967, during a pre-launch test for Apollo 1.
