Kutluğ Ataman is a Turkish-American filmmaker and contemporary artist, born in Istanbul in 1961. His early life was marked by involvement in documenting the 1980 Turkish coup d'état, leading to imprisonment and torture. After his release, he moved to California, earning a BA in Film from UC and an MFA, before returning to feature filmmaking with notable works like "Dark Waters".
