Golda Meir

Biography

Golda Meir was a trailblazing leader who became Israel's first female head of government as Prime Minister from 1969 to 1974. Born in Kiev to a Ukrainian-Jewish family, she immigrated to the United States and later Palestine, joining the Labor Zionist movement and rising through the ranks of the Jewish Agency during World War II. A key figure in Israel's founding, Meir signed the Israeli Declaration of Independence in 1948 and went on to serve as Minister of Labour and Foreign Minister before taking the top job in Israel.
