Ian Charleson was a Scottish stage and film actor known for his critically acclaimed leads in Guys and Dolls, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and Hamlet, among others. He won acclaim for his roles as Olympic athlete Eric Liddell in Chariots of Fire and Reverend Charlie Andrews in Gandhi, both Oscar-winning films. A leading figure on the British stage, Charleson was diagnosed with HIV in 1986 before dying at age 40 in 1990, sparking a shift in awareness about AIDS in the UK.
