Joseph Daniel Turner Mawle was born on March 21, 1974, in Oxford, England, and grew up in a Victorian manor house on a farm outside Shipston-on-Stour. He attended a boarding school for special needs due to his severe dyslexia, later pursuing an acting career before contracting labyrinthitis, leaving him with significant hearing impairment. Mawle's notable roles include Benjen Stark in Game of Thrones and Detective Inspector Jedediah Shine in Ripper Street.
