Biography

Gene Washington was a standout athlete and leader in his high school years, leading Long Beach Polytechnic High School to a league championship as quarterback in 1964 and being elected the school's first black student body president in 1965. He played three years of varsity football at Stanford University, where he became the school's first black quarterback and set career records for receptions and receiving yards. Washington was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in 1969 and went on to have a successful NFL career.
