Biography

George Godfrey was a heavyweight boxer from Alabama, known as "The Leiperville Shadow." He fought from 1919 to 1937 and adopted his ring name after George "Old Chocolate" Godfrey, a renowned Black Canadian boxer. Although he never held the world heavyweight championship due to the color bar in the sport, Williams won the International Boxing Union's version of the title in 1935.
