Clyde Stubblefield was a self-taught drummer whose syncopated patterns on James Brown's recordings are considered funk standards. He joined Brown's band in the early 1960s and later settled in Madison, Wisconsin, where he became a staple of the local music scene. His drumming style heavily influenced hip hop music, particularly his break in "Funky Drummer," which was widely sampled in the 1980s.
