Helen Craig was born on May 13, 1912, in San Antonio, Texas, to copper executive Edward A. Craig. She graduated from the Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre and began her stage career, landing notable roles such as Belinda in Johnny Belinda, a role that required her to learn sign language to portray her deaf character. Her work spanned Broadway productions and television appearances, including The Waltons and Kojak.
