Biography

Hilo Hattie was a Hawaiian singer, hula dancer, actress, and comedienne of Native Hawaiian ancestry. Born Clarissa Haili on October 28, 1901, she began entertaining her students at Waipahu Elementary School with comedy hula routines in 1923. Her signature tune, the Don McDiarmid Sr-Johnny Noble song "When Hilo Hattie Does the Hilo Hop," became a huge success after an impromptu performance on a cruise to Portland, Oregon, in 1936.
