Biography

Mary Virginia Martin was a renowned American actress and singer who originated leading roles in stage productions such as Nellie Forbush in South Pacific and Maria von Trapp in The Sound of Music, earning her four Tony Awards and an Emmy Award. A muse to Rodgers and Hammerstein, she became a Broadway star with the hit song "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" and reprised it in the film Night and Day. She was named a Kennedy Center Honoree in 1989.
