Biography

Franz Josef Strauß was a German politician who served as chairman of the Christian Social Union in Bavaria from 1961 to 1988 and minister-president of Bavaria from 1978 until his death in 1988. Prior to that, he held various federal cabinet positions between 1953 and 1969. A co-founder of Airbus, Strauß was also a key figure in West German politics, marked by his rivalry with Helmut Kohl.
