Ion Caramitru was a renowned Romanian stage and film actor, director, and politician who served as Minister of Culture from 1996 to 2000. Born on March 9, 1942, in Bucharest to an Aromanian family, he graduated from the I. L. Caragiale Institute for Theater and Film Arts in 1964 and debuted on stage a year earlier with a critically acclaimed Hamlet production at the Bulandra Theater.
