John James Conyers Jr. was a Democrat and the longest-serving African American member of Congress, serving over 50 years in the House of Representatives from 1965 to 2017. A civil rights movement veteran, he co-founded the Congressional Black Caucus in 1969 and supported landmark legislation, including the creation of a single-payer healthcare system and reparations for slavery's descendants. He was the Dean of the House of Representatives and a prominent progressive voice.
