François Truffaut

Biography

François Truffaut was a French filmmaker, actor, and critic who co-founded the French New Wave movement. As a young man, he wrote for film critic André Bazin's Cahiers du Cinéma, developing the auteur theory that posits a director as a film's true author. His defining films include The 400 Blows (1959) and Breathless (1960), which chronicle the story of Antoine Doinel with Jean-Pierre Léaud.
