Edmund Sixtus Muskie was a pioneering American statesman who served as Maine's governor from 1955 to 1959, a US Senator from 1959 to 1980, and the 58th US Secretary of State under President Jimmy Carter from 1980 to 1981. He was a champion of environmentalism, advancing the Clean Air Act of 1970 and the Clean Water Act of 1972. Muskie's legacy includes negotiating the release of 52 Americans during the Iran hostage crisis and being honored with a public holiday in Maine.
