Marpessa Dawn was a French-American actress, singer, and dancer of African-American and Filipino heritage, born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She won the role of "Eurydice" in Marcel Camus's film Black Orpheus, which won the Palme d'Or and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1959. Known for her striking beauty, Dawn was featured on the cover of Ebony magazine. She married Belgian actor Georges-Eric Vander-Elst in a secretive civil ceremony.
