Biography

Paolo Macchiarini is a convicted felon and former regenerative medicine researcher known for research fraud and manipulative behavior. As a thoracic surgeon, he pioneered the use of biological and synthetic scaffolds seeded with patients' own stem cells for trachea transplants, but his unorthodox methods led to fatalities for seven of eight patients. His academic credentials were also called into question, and he was involved in a scandal that led to the resignation of several high-ranking officials.
