Avec sa vois chevrotante, Il fut aussi un doubleur important, notamment les personnages de vieillards des versions françaises et particulièrement Walter Brennan dans la Rivière rouge (Red River) d'Howard Hawks (1948), Rio Bravo du même (1959) et bien d'autres. Il fut marié et divorcé de l'actrice Sylvie..
