Koichi Wakata is a Japanese engineer and astronaut born on August 1, 1963. He retired from JAXA in 2024 after a nearly two-decade career in spaceflight, logging over 500 days in space across five missions. Wakata made history as the first Japanese commander of the International Space Station during Expedition 39. He has also worked as a structural engineer for Japan Airlines and trained at NASA's Johnson Space Center.
