In junior high school, he met Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, with whom he formed The Belleville Three. Atkins' work with Cybotron, Model 500, and Infiniti helped shape the genre of techno, alongside Saunderson. As a key figure in the genre's inception, Atkins is credited with originating the music style techno.
