Erich Maria Remarque
Biography
Erich Maria Remarque was a German novelist born on June 22, 1898, to a working-class Roman Catholic family in Osnabrück. He wrote the landmark novel "All Quiet on the Western Front," an international bestseller that created a new literary genre of veterans writing about conflict, and its anti-war themes led to his condemnation by Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels. He emigrated to Switzerland and later the US, becoming a naturalized citizen, where he lived until 1948.
