Biography
Mark David Chapman is a convicted murderer and a devoted fan of the Beatles, whose fascination with the band and its members turned to obsession and ultimately, violence. In 1980, he fatally shot John Lennon outside the Dakota apartment building in New York City. Chapman had planned to model his life after the protagonist of J.D. Salinger's novel "The Catcher in the Rye" and had considered targeting other public figures.
