Charles Edward Anderson Berry was an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist who pioneered rock and roll, earning him the nickname "Father of Rock and Roll". His influential songs, including "Maybellene", "Roll Over Beethoven", and "Johnny B. Goode", developed rhythm and blues into rock's distinctive elements. Born in St. Louis, Berry's early life was marked by an interest in music and a conviction for armed robbery that led to a stint in a reformatory.
