Jacques-Yves Cousteau was a French naval officer and oceanographer who revolutionized underwater exploration with his invention of the Aqua-Lung SCUBA apparatus. His groundbreaking documentary series "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau" (1966-1976) brought the wonders of the ocean to a global audience, followed by "The Cousteau Odyssey" from 1977 to 1982. A filmmaker and author, Cousteau won the Palme d'Or and Academy Award for Best Documentary for his film adaptation of "The Silent World."
