Jean Rouch was a French filmmaker and anthropologist who co-founded cinéma-vérité in France, characterized by direct cinema aesthetics. Over 60 years of filmmaking in Africa, he pioneered ethnofiction, blurring the line between fiction and documentary. Influenced by surrealism and acclaimed by the French New Wave, Rouch's work was marked by controversy and innovative storytelling. He is remembered as a pioneering filmmaker who embodied the concept of shared anthropology.
