Stuart Hall

Biography

Stuart Hall was a Jamaican-born British Marxist sociologist, cultural theorist, and political activist. He co-founded the influential New Left Review in the 1950s and played a pivotal role in shaping the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies at Birmingham University, expanding the scope of cultural studies to address race and gender. Hall served as its director from 1972 to 1979 and later became a professor of sociology at the Open University.
