Biography

Elmer Francis Layden was a pioneering figure in American football, starring as a member of the legendary "Four Horsemen" backfield at Notre Dame. He went on to play professionally in the original AFL and began his coaching career at Columbia College and Duquesne University. Layden served as the head coach at Notre Dame and was later elected NFL commissioner from 1941 to 1946, earning him induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951.
