He began his career with a degree from the University of Tübingen, graduating in Germanistics with an emphasis on theatre studies and acting. Notable roles include Thoas in Iphigenie in Tauris (1980) and Der Auftrag by Heiner Müller (1981), both staged at Frankfurt's Schauspielhaus.
