Biography

Joseph Manchin III is a West Virginia politician and businessman who has served as the state's senior U.S. senator since 2010. Before entering politics, Manchin co-founded Enersystems, a coal brokerage company owned by his family. He won the 2004 and 2008 gubernatorial elections, and the 2010 special election to fill the Senate seat, before becoming the only Democrat holding statewide or congressional office in West Virginia.
