Sharpe James was a prominent Democrat in New Jersey, serving as the 37th mayor of Newark from 1986 to 2006 and a state senator from 1999 to 2008. He is best known for his 2002 mayoral election, which was the subject of the 2005 film Street Fight. Convicted of corruption charges in 2008, James's career effectively ended after a 27-month prison sentence. He passed away in 2025.
