Biography

Gilbert M. Anderson, known as "Broncho Billy," was an American actor, writer, and film director who pioneered the Western film genre. Born Maxwell Henry Aronson in 1880, he began his career in vaudeville and theater before meeting Edwin S. Porter, who hired him as an actor and script collaborator. Anderson co-founded Essanay Studios with George Kirk Spoor and went on to appear in over 300 short films, starring in his iconic 148 western shorts playing cowboy Bronco Billy.
