Biography

Louise Simone Bennett-Coverley, known by her pen name Miss Lou, was a Jamaican poet, folklorist, actress, writer, and educator who worked to preserve the validity of local languages for literary expression. Her poetry, written in Jamaican Patois or Creole, was first published in 1943 in the Sunday Gleaner. A scholarship from the British Council enabled her to study at London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1945, marking a significant milestone in her career.
