Biography

Karel Kachyňa was a Czech film director and screenwriter born on May 1, 1924, in Vyškov, Czechoslovakia. He studied at Baťa School of Art and later attended the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, where he graduated alongside notable peers Vojtěch Jasný and Antonín Kachlík. Kachyňa went on to direct socialist realist propaganda documentaries with Jasný and traveled to China in 1952, making three documentaries about the country.
