Vinnette Carroll
Biography
Vinnette Carroll was a pioneering American playwright, actress, and theatre director who broke barriers in the industry. She became the first African-American woman to direct on Broadway with her 1972 production of "Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope." Her groundbreaking work earned her a Tony Award nomination for direction, making her the only African-American woman to receive this honor until Liesl Tommy's 2016 nomination.
