Mark Freuder Knopfler was born on August 12, 1949, in Glasgow, Scotland, and grew up in Newcastle. He co-founded the rock band Dire Straits with his brother David in 1977, which went on to sell over 120 million records and feature six studio albums, including Brothers in Arms. After the band's dissolution, Knopfler pursued a solo career, producing ten albums and composing scores for nine films, cementing his status as a virtuosic guitarist.
