John Robert Cherry III was an American film director and screenwriter, best known for creating the beloved character of Ernest P. Worrell. Born on October 11, 1948, in Nashville, Tennessee, Cherry attended the Ringling School of Art and Design before developing the "Ernest" character, which was later portrayed by Jim Varney. Cherry also directed several films and TV shows, including the popular series "Hey, Vern! It's Ernest".
