Nomzamo Winifred Zanyiwe Madikizela-Mandela, known as Winnie Mandela, was a South African politician and anti-apartheid activist who served as a Member of Parliament and deputy minister of arts and culture. A prominent figure in the ANC, she headed its Women's League and earned the nickname "Mother of the Nation." After her husband Nelson Mandela's 27-year imprisonment, she became his public face, rising to prominence within the domestic anti-apartheid movement.
