Dune

In the distant future, the most valuable substance in the universe is the spice Melange, which extends life and expands consciousness on the only planet where it exists: Arrakis, also known as Dune. The setting is a conflict between rival noble families vying for control of this harsh desert planet, home to gigantic sandworms and the native Fremen people who have long prophesied the coming of a messiah. Paul Atreides, the scion of a powerful noble family, is appointed to control Arrakis, bringing him into conflict with his former overlords, House Harkonnen, and the Emperor Shaddam IV, who fears the Atreides due to reports of a secret army they are amassing.
